Philanthropist (Schooner) logbook, 1796.

The logbook of the schooner Philanthropist details a shipping voyage to Bilbao, Lisbon, and Marblehead, Mass., June-Oct. 1796. The schooner's home port was Marblehead; the owner was Samuel Hooper; the master was John Prince. The logbook includes notes on birds seen during the voyage; illustrations (profile views); equipment and supplies, specifically provisions, aboard ship; astronomy observations, including the sighting of an aurora borealis; shipboard occupations; and ship's papers, including the manifest, port charges, and accounts. During its voyage, the Philanthropist spoke the schooner Betsy out of Salem.
